The Barcelona terrorist attack, 18th August 2017

So, as so many people know I’m off to Barcelona in just one week’s time, I’ve had a lot of messages and phone calls asking me if I’m still going. Of course I’m still going!

If you’ve been living under a rock, then you wouldn’t know that on 18th August 2017 there was a horrific terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain. An attack that left 15 people dead and over 130 injured. A van drove in to the crowds at Barcelona’s Las Ramblas boulevard. Whilst that was happening, a car also ploughed into pedestrians in the coastal town of Cambrils.

If we live our lives scared of what may happen… are you truly living?! These attacks, carried out by awful human being could happen anywhere. They want to win. They want to spread fear. All I’ve seen in the news reports about these attacks is more people on the streets. More love. Las Ramblas was packed when I saw it on the news. Locals, tourists, of all ages. And why the hell not!

So many people have lost their lives. Innocent people. What did they ever do? Apart from be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Which actually, I don’t like that phrase. Why is it the wrong place?! They were living. Potentially experiencing a new place. Perhaps they were on holiday with their family. Or they were Spanish locals just going about their every day life. What makes it the wrong place? Because some sick and twisted individual, that belongs to a violent group of humans which likes to inflict fear by killing innocent people said so?

It’s infuriating. But how does the world stop them? Well if I knew the answer to that I’d be in politics. But we just can’t let them win. So yes, I’m still going. In fact, I feel like it’d probably be one of the safest places to be right now. Security is going to be high. They’ve arrested people in connection with and as their investigations continue, it looks like the attacks could have been so much worse. Which is heart breaking, obviously. But also it’s amazing that they weren’t.

Am I nervous about going to Barcelona?

Abso-bloody-lutely! But for my own personal reasons. Because I’ve never been great with spending time alone. Which was one of the reasons of booking the trip anyway! NOT because of terrorists. if you’re thinking about booking a solo trip, I put together the 12 travel essentials I’ll be taking to Barcelona.

The only thing I’ll leave you with is, please please PLEASE do not let all of the drastic things that are happening in the world stop you from doing things that you want to do. Go and live!
